European Middleweight Champion Matthew Macklin will link up with new trainer Freddie Roach in Los Angeles next week as he begins preparations for the first defence of his title. Macklin defends his belt against the highly touted Dmitry Pirog in April and he will prepare for the unbeaten Russian at Roach's legendary Wildcard Gym.
Roach is generally regarded as boxing's best trainer and has been the guiding force behind Manny Pacquiao's rise to become the best pound for pound fighter in the World. Macklin believes linking up with Roach could prove crucial as he looks to make an assault on a World title in 2010. |

His name might not be overly familiar to Irish sports fans but Peter Maher holds a unique place in Irish boxing history. The Galway man was the first ever Irish Heavyweight Champion winning the title in 1890 before going on to win the World Heavyweight title in 1895.
Now 120 years after being crowned Ireland's first heavyweight champ another Galway man wants to follow in Maher's footsteps with Coleman Barrett aiming to lift the Irish title when he takes on Colin Kenna on the Yanjing Fight night at the National Stadium, Dublin on Saturday, February 13th. |

The dawn of a new decade signifies the beginning of another exciting period for Irish boxing with the stars of the next generation being showcased on the Yanjing Fight Night at the National Stadium in Dublin on Saturday, February 13th. For the first time ever a record breaking 4 Irish titles will be up for grabs on the same night with the Heavyweight, Super Middleweight, Lightweight and Featherweight belts on the line. The event will be headlined by the long talked about clash between unbeaten Cavan star Andy Murray and Dublin's Oisin “Gael Force” Fagan in their Irish Lightweight decider. |
