Wednesday, 18 January 2012
For the past few weeks, rumours have been circulating throughout the boxing industry on when, where and against whom Middleweight Champion Sergio Maravilla Martinez would next be defending his world championship. After some speculation, it is now official that Martinez will defend against the WBC #3 and WBA #5 rated middleweight in the world, Ireland's Matthew Macklin. Martinez-Macklin will take place at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, March 17 (St. Patrick's Day) in the first major boxing event in New York City in 2012. DiBella Entertainment will promote the event, which will be televised live on HBO's World Championship Boxing starting at 10PM ET/PT.

"The atmosphere at The Theater at MSG will be electric when Matthew Macklin challenges the great Sergio Martinez for the REAL middleweight championship on March 17", said promoter of Martinez, Macklin and Lee, Lou DiBella. Matthew should already be a world champion after destroying Felix Sturm and is the most deserving challenger to Martinez, the middleweight champion and one of the three pound-for-pound kings.

"My goal is to be the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world and March 17 is another step in that direction", said Martinez. "Macklin is a very tough opponent and I know that he will make for a very exciting fight at Madison Square Garden."

"I have tons of respect for what Sergio has achieved and the way he conducts himself outside of the ring", said Macklin. "He is an excellent athlete and almost universally regarded as the best boxer on the planet outside of Mayweather and Pacquiao, but I've always believed in myself and said I belong at this level. I proved it against Sturm and everyone, bar the two judges who scored it for him, could see that. Fights like the Sturm one and this Martinez fight are the type of fights I've craved my whole career. I'm at this level now and I'm determined to stay here."

Macklin added, "I'm going to war right from round one and I have the youth, strength, size and desire to walk through anything Sergio has. I will go through walls on St. Patrick's Day to win this fight and I'll set a pace from the very first bell that Sergio won't be able to cope with."

"Sergio Martinez in an intriguing fight with Matthew Macklin on St. Patrick's Day in New York at a world class venue is a spectacular event and we're delighted to be televising the fight live on the network", said Kery Davis, senior vice president of programming, HBO Sports. "Sergio always comes ready to work and Matthew will bring a formidable challenge, so fight fans should get ready."

Martinez' longtime advisor Sampson Lewkowicz echoed the statements of DiBella and Davis saying, "I strongly believe that this is the icing on the cake for the Irish on St. Patrick's Day and it will be an exciting night of boxing. Our champion is excited to headline at MSG on such a great and exciting day in New York City as St. Patrick's Day."

"Madison Square Garden always looks to host the best fighters in the world and Sergio Martinez certainly fits that description", said Joel Fisher, executive vice president, MSG Sports. "Fighting top contender Matthew Macklin, thrown in with the excitement of St. Patrick's Day, and March 17 will be an extremely exciting evening of boxing at The World's Most Famous Arena."

Tickets are priced at $505, $355, $205, $125 and $65 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased through the Madison Square Garden Box Office or through Ticketmaster, at ticketmaster.com, or call (800) 745-3000.
