Matthew Macklin set for World Middleweight title tilt against Gennady Golovkin in US
Thursday, 11 April 2013

WORLD MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP BOUT: GENNADY "GGG" GOLOVKIN VS. MATTHEW "MACK THE KNIFE" MACKLIN - SATURDAY, JUNE 29, 2013 at FOXWOODS RESORT CASINO - Live on HBO®

NEW YORK CITY (April 11, 2013) - Foxwoods ® Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, will play host to the highly anticipated World Middleweight Championship bout between WBA (World Boxing Association) / IBO (International Boxing Organization) Champion GENNADY "GGG" GOLOVKIN and top-rated contender and former world title challenger MATTHEW "MACK THE KNIFE" MACKLIN on Saturday, June 29, 2013 in the beautiful, state of the art MGM Grand Theater. The world title bout will be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark®, beginning at 9:45 PM ET/PT.

The Golovkin-Macklin World Championship Bout is promoted by K2 Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, in association with Foxwoods Resort Casino.

"I'm excited to return to the United States and once again fight on HBO. Matthew Macklin is a skilled, strong fighter and I look forward to the challenge of defending my titles on June 29th," said Golovkin. "I have seen a few of his fights and am very conscious of how tough of a battle this is."

"Golovkin hasn't put a foot wrong yet as a pro. He's destroyed pretty much everyone and, as a consequence, he's probably the most hyped fighter in the sport right now," said Macklin. "People have made him out to be this monster, but he bleeds red just like everyone else and, for the first time in his career, he's going to be stepping into the ring against a big, strong, proper world-class middleweight.

"When you compare my last three opponents to Golovkin's last three opponents, it's clear who the proven entity is, going into this fight. I got robbed against Felix Sturm in Germany, it was nip-and-tuck between me and Sergio Martinez until I got caught in the eleventh, and last time out, I blew away Joachim Alcine inside a round, a former world champ who was coming off a career-best win."

"Gennady is excited to return to the ring so quickly to defend his titles against a proven, top-rated middleweight in Matthew Macklin. Gennady was ringside for Macklin's fight against Sergio Martinez last March and saw firsthand how dangerous he is, as he dropped Sergio in the seventh round," said Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions. "GGG has become one of the most talked-about fighters in boxing. This fight with Macklin will be a very hot ticket. We're thankful to HBO for featuring Gennady again and also to the Foxwoods Resort Casino for hosting this event."

"Golovkin-Macklin is one of the very best fights that can be made in the middleweight division and all of boxing," said Macklin's promoter, Lou DiBella. "It figures to be a barnburner and we are thrilled that Matthew is getting another deserved opportunity at a world title."

"This is a fight fan's fight," said Kery Davis, Senior Vice President, HBO Sports.  "We are thrilled that both fighters accepted the challenge and we are looking forward to a terrific night of boxing on HBO."

"Foxwoods Resort Casino is proud to be teaming up with DiBella Entertainment and K2 Promotions to bring a stellar championship match to Connecticut; proving once again that Foxwoods is the premier venue for professional boxing on the East Coast," said Scott Butera, Foxwoods' president and CEO. "The Golovkin-Macklin fight will be one for the record books."

Known for his heavy hands and brutal knockouts and sporting a perfect record of 26-0-0 with 23 knockouts, Golovkin has quickly become the most talked-about fighter in the sport. His 88% knockout ratio ranks highest among active world champions.

Based in Stuttgart, Germany, and training under the watchful eye of Abel Sanchez in Big Bear, California, Golovkin dramatically burst onto the U.S. boxing scene this past SEPTEMBER 1 with a sensational performance, dropping WBA #3-ranked challenger Grzegorz Proksa three times en route to a fifth-round stoppage in Verona, New York. He followed that up with a dominating seventh-round stoppage of Gabriel Rosado on JANUARY 19 at Madison Square Garden, "The Mecca of Boxing". Both world title defenses were televised on HBO.

Most recently, Golovkin stayed undefeated with a devastating third-round knockout of former world title challenger Nobuhiro Ishida on MARCH 30, in Monte Carlo, Monaco, his 13th consecutive victory by knockout and eighth title defense.

Irish middleweight contender Matthew "Mack the Knife" Macklin, 29-4 (20 KOs), is an intelligent boxer-puncher, who has shown that he is not afraid to engage or press the action when necessary. He is currently ranked #3 by the WBC, #11 by the WBA, and #14 by the IBF.

In his first stateside appearance since a pair of 2005 victories, Macklin challenged middleweight champion Sergio "Maravillia" Martinez at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saint Patrick's Day, March 17, 2012. Although he came up short, Macklin gave the champion all he could handle for 11 rounds, even scoring a knockdown in the seventh frame, in front of thousands of fans at the Garden and those watching on HBO.

Returning to the ring six months later, Macklin faced former junior middleweight champion Joachim Alcine in Las Vegas, destroying him inside one round, making an emphatic statement that he belongs among the best middleweights in the world.

Taylor hoping fans can raise the roof for upcoming Dublin and Mayo bouts
Thursday, 14 March 2013
Having practically raised the roof at the Excel Arena during last year's Olympic Games Katie Taylor is hoping that Irish fans can repeat the trick on home soil for her bouts in Dublin and Castlebar later this month.

The Irish fans famously topped the charts at last years games as the atmosphere for Taylor's fights reached fever pitch with a sound level of 113.7 decibels recorded at the Excel Arena in London's docklands. It was the highest decibel level recorded at the games and fell just short of the noise created by a jet engine. Now Taylor's fans will get the opportunity to recreate that atmosphere when she returns to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin on Friday, March 22nd before heading West on Sunday, March 24th for a bout at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar.

The Olympic Gold medallist tackles Ukrainian champ Yulia Tsiplakova in Dublin before facing old rival, Denista Eliseeva – the last boxer to have secured a victory over Taylor, in Castlebar. Having already fought in front of a packed house at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre last month with a comprehensive win over German champion Maike Klueners promoter Brian Peters believes fans will raise the roof for their hero once again.

"Obviously it's pretty hard to recreate the emotion and tension from the Olympics but the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre certainly lived up to it's name last month," said Peters. "It was rocking for Katie's fight so we're going to measure the decibels there on Friday week and then again on Sunday in Castlebar to see how they compare to the Olympics.

"If anyone's worth making a lot of noise for it's Katie Taylor. She was terrific against Klueners and the frightening prospect for her competitors is that she still seems to be improving. Despite having won five European Championships, four World titles and an Olympic Gold medal the hunger she still has is unbelievable."

Taylor is relishing the prospect of another two fights in quick succession as part of her preparations for the upcoming European Union Championships which will take place in Hungary in early July.

"It was like the Excel Arena all over again stepping into the ring at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. I got a huge reception from the fans and it really lifts you. I was happy with my performance but I'm always looking to improve and it's those little improvements that can be the difference when it comes to the major championships."

Katie's father and trainer Pete is keen to stress how seriously they are approaching this months bouts. "I don't think people realise just how seriously Katie and her opponents are taking these bouts," said Pete. "Katie's approach is to treat every fight as if it's an Olympic final and to never look beyond her next fight. For the opponents it's a massive opportunity for them to take on a reigning Olympic Champion on a big show so they all raise their game because of that. Katie is the girl they all want to beat now so it's a lot of pressure on Katie but she handles it brilliantly."

Taylor's opponent in Castlebar, Denista Eliseeva is the last women to have had her hand raised against Taylor. Eliseeva was awarded a controversial points win over Taylor just over two years ago in a multi nations tournament in her native Bulgaria and there was little doubt that it was a hometown decision.

"Whenever people say that she is the last girl to beat Katie I always correct them and say she was the last to get a decision over her," explained Pete. "Nobody in the arena outside of the judges thought that Katie lost that fight. Katie has avenged every defeat she’s ever had and she beat Eliseeva later that same year so we're looking forward to meeting her again in Castlebar."

Joining Taylor in action on the March 22nd Bord Gáis Energy Theatre bill will be the 2012 Olympic team captain and European Silver medallist Darren O'Neill.

While in Castlebar the bill will also feature local hero and European Champion Ray Moylette and Taylor's Olympic and Bray boxing club team mate, Adam Nolan in separate bouts along with a host of local talent.

Tickets for Katie Taylor’s bout at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin on Friday, March 22nd are priced from €40 (with discounted tickets available for Under 14's from €25) and are available from Ticketmaster.ie (0818 719 377) or the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre box office.

Tickets for Katie Taylor's bout at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar on Sunday, March 24nd are priced from €25 and available from Ticketmaster.ie or the Royal Theatre Box Office (0818 300 000). A booking fee may apply.

Taylor planning busy March following comprehensive wins in Dublin
Monday, 25 February 2013
Olympic Champion Katie Taylor wowed a sold out Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin last night with a dominant win over two weight German champion Maike Klueners and will now set her focus on the next two steps on the Road to Rio and her ultimate goal of becoming a two time Olympic Champion.

The Bray woman will return to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on March 22nd when she takes on Ukrainian champ Yulia Tsiplakova before heading for the Royal Theatre, Castlebar on March 24th when she faces old rival, Denista Eliseeva – who remains the last boxer to have secured a victory over Taylor.

The two met in Eliseeva’s native Bulgaria back in February of 2011 in a multi nations tournament with Eliseeva awarded a controversial points win. Taylor and her Dad Pete were left baffled by the decision after what appeared to have been a clear cut win for the Irish woman. Taylor has since avenged the defeat and can now look forward to a meeting with Eliseeva on home soil when they clash at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar next month.

However Taylor’s Dad Pete insists it won’t be a revenge mission. "I hadn’t even told Katie about the opponents for March because she was just concentrating on last weekend. She never looks beyond her next opponent so first we’ll focus on Tsiplakova and then Eliseeva.

"Whenever people say that she is the last girl to beat Katie I always correct them and say she was the last to get a decision over her because nobody outside of the judges thought that Katie lost that fight. Katie has avenged every defeat she’s ever had and she beat Eliseeva in the European Union championships later that same year but we’re looking forward to boxing her again in Ireland."

Following her win in Dublin overnight Katie was in Castlebar today to meet fans and confirm details of next month bouts at the Royal Theatre. The 26-year-old says she’s excited at the prospect of another fight night at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre before heading west on the same weekend. "The reception I got last night was amazing and I’m so grateful for everyone who came out to support me. It felt like the Excel Arena in London all over again and it definitely spurs you on. The crowd can really lift you and you want to put on the best performance you can for them."

Taylor hopes that the series of fight will inspire a whole new generation to follow in her footsteps and after last nights win over Klueners she stayed back to sign autographs and have countless pictures taken with fans. "I’d love to think I’m a good role model for kids," said Taylor. "At the moment there are a lot of bad role models out there and they are often the ones getting on the front of the papers or magazines so it’s important to be a good role model for all these young kids and to set a good example for them so it’s something I take very seriously.

"Any sport is a great for kids, it’s a healthy lifestyle and they learn so much about themselves, its character building and a great way of life for any child."

Tickets for Katie Taylor’s upcoming bouts at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin on Friday, March 22nd and the Royal Theatre, Castlebar are available from Ticketmaster.ie (0818 719 377) or the Theatre box offices.
